Stephanie Woodling

The lyric mezzo-soprano Stephanie Woodling offers a great theatrical flair, as well as a voice that is characterized by warmth and power ... "enthused Tim Smith of Opera News. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Ms. Woodling holds a bachelor's and master's degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music, where she also received the President's Award. There her operatic debut in the title role of Handel's Lotario followed that of the Isolier in Rossini's Le Comte d 'Ory. Immediately afterwards she attracted a lot of attention with her debut at the Santa Fe Opera as the second servant in The Egyptian Helena by Richard Strauss.

In the 2011/2012 season at the Opernwerkstatt am Rhein in the title role of Reineke Fuchs, in the world premiere by composer Ulrike Haage. In 2009/2010 Ms. Woodling made her debut at the Aalto Theater as Ino in Handel's Semele. She sang five seasons at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. There she played in the roles of Giulietta (LesContes d'Hoffmann), Dorabella, the second lady, Hansel, Annio, Siébel, Ascagne (Les Troyens), Wellgunde, Tessa (The Gondoliers), Christa (Vĕc Makropulos), Lapák (Príhody Lišky Bystroušky), the third elf (Rusalka), and the Antonia (lowlands). She made her debut at this house in 2004 as the second maid in the then new production of Elektra.

In the United States, Ms. Woodling played on numerous opera stages. Mention should be made of her appearances as Stephano in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at the Baltimore Opera, as Cherubino at the Michigan Opera, for whom the Opera News Online praised Mrs. Woodling as “... the first Cherubino I met with unabashed authenticity embodied a boy in awkward adolescence. She also sings beautifully, ”and as Donna Elvira at Opera Pacific, which critics rated as“ ... an intellectual explosion full of liveliness, a lovely, cheeky performance full of depth and feeling for the character of the role ”.

At the New York City Opera, Stephanie Woodling played in A Little Night Music, Rigoletto and La Traviata. Before that, as a soloist in the young ensemble of Opera Pacific, she could be seen in many roles, e.g. that of Meg in Little Women, Flora, Mercedes in Carmen, Jade Boucher in Dead Man Walking, as well as that of the second lady in the Magic Flute. Most recently, Stephanie Woodling played Stephano from Romeo and Juliet at the Lyric Opera in Kansas City, Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi at the OK Mozart Festival and Mrs. Segstrom in the Los Angeles Opera production of A Little Night Music and Caramoor as Flora. Her concert repertoire includes works such as Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Mahler's Songs of a Traveling Journeyman, Mendelssohn's Midnight Dream, and the role of Solveig in Grieg's music accompanying Peer Gynt.

Ms. Woodling has also been making music with her Close-Harmony Swing Trio FräuleinSwing since 2013.
