James Martin

James Martin, an Australian, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at the University of Music Mannheim. Masterclasses followed with Helmut German, Emma Kirkby, Graham Johnson and Nancy Argenta. He was also a Fellow of the International Association of Wagner Societies, Mannheim. During his studies he was engaged at the National Theater Mannheim for various roles as a guest and joined the British Youth Opera, the Theater Lindbury, the Royal Opera House, and the Covent Garden in London. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Dusseldorf he was heard in Mozart's Magic Flute, Lortzings Zar und Zimmermann, Verdi's Otello and Rigoletto, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers and in the premiere Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, among other shows. He has collaborated with renowned directors like Yoshi Oida, Christof Loy and Sebastian Baumgarten.

With the State Theater Stuttgart he took part in the premiere of Mike Svoboda Erwin, the Natural Talent (Prof. Hoggins) and sang in Theater Dortmund Svoboda, The Incredible Spotz (King). At the Bregenz Festival he debuted as Ben Benny in Britten's Paul Bunyan. On Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen he sang in The Marriage of Figaro - Cherubino meddles the role of Almaviva. James Martin was heard in Puccini's La Bohème (Schaunard), Benatzky's The White Horse Inn (Leopold), Strauss's Die Fledermaus (Falcon) and La Cenerentola (Dandini) at the Kammeroper Köln. In 2014 he first sang at the Opéra de Lyon in the role of Hobson in Peter Grimes. In the beginning of 2014 again at the Opera Festival in Schreker's Die Gezeichen (Gonsalvo Fieschi). In addition to his opera career James Martin worked intensively on his concert repertoire. He sang Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Missa Sollemnis, Mozart's Coronation Mass and Requiem and Schubert's Mass in G major. He went on tour with Bach's St. John Passion and Mass in B Minor under Helmuth Rilling.
